Professor Mingkai Gao and his studies on theoretical linguistics
Prof. Mingkai Gao is a well-known theoretical linguist. This article gives a full introduction on his academic career, especially on his main books "General linguistics", "On Chinese Grammar", "Grammatical Theory" and "Language", evaluating their roles in construction of linguistic theory and showing their shortcomings. Prof. Gao first proposed the viewpoint that Chinese words can not be divided into different parts of speech except of function words. This viewpoint caused a most influential and great debate. Referring to this great debate, this article also shows us Prof. Gao's scientific spirit and his academic ideas developed when he argued heatedly with his rivals, insisted in truth and revised theoretic thought.
