1. Mrs. Brown is forty-two years old, and has two sons and one daughter, Alice. Mrs. Brown gets up earlier than any other member of her family. She is very busy every day. She is a good cook. Alice sometimes helps her mother with the cooking.



2. Yesterday was Sunday. Because there was no school, I went to a movie with three of my friends. It was raining, so we took our umbrellas. There were many people on the train.
   The movie began at two o’clock. We liked it very much. We enjoyed the movie for two hours. After the movie, we went to a coffee shop. My friends drank coffee, but I drank tea. It was a good day.



3. Every Saturday, John goes to the store with his mother. They get on the bus at 9:00 in the morning. The trip doesn’t take long and they reach the store at 9:30.
   John’ s mother buys meat and vegetables. John looks at the magazines. He wants to buy candy, but he has no money. Sometimes John’ s mother buys him candy. They leave the store at 11:30.



4. Mr. Brown often goes to the park with his family on Sundays. He goes with his wife, son, and two daughters. They get on the train after lunch and ride for an hour to the park. They usually leave the park at dinner time.
  At the park, they walk together and look at the trees. Mr. Brown’ s daughters often read books. Sometimes, Mr. Brown and his son, Peter, play catch. They have a good time at the park.



5. Linda comes home at eight o’clock. She is surprised to find the front gate is open. When she gets into the kitchen, she notices that the gas oven is missing and a lamp has been knocked over. You can tell what must have happened to the gas oven and what Linda should do about it.



6. Mr. White owns a bar in New York. He likes children. He has two children himself. But he thinks that children should not come into his bar. In New York, children under eighteen can not drink alcohol and they can’ t go into bars. In Mr. White’ s bar, there is a sign over the bar. It says: Anyone under eighteen is prohibited from drinking. It’ s the law of New York.



7. Whenever I have a meeting, Mary is always the first person that I’ d like to invite. She is talkative lady. This is the reason why I want her to come to the meeting. She will be able to make my other guests laugh. She doesn’t get any angry even if someone tries to make fun of her. She can also discuss almost anything you can think of.



8. Anna was five years old. Her mother took her to the biggest shop in town. Anna found a beautiful doll in one of the show windows, and looked at it for a few minutes. When she looked around, she could not find her mother. She was very young, but she did not cry. She saw a policeman in the street, and went to him. She asked, “Have you seen a lady without a small girl?” “Yes, I have,” answered the policeman. Anna said with a smile, “I am the small girl. Where is the lady?”



9. Last Sunday was a beautiful day. Paul went on a picnic to a mountain with his parents. They went to the foot of the mountain by car. Then they walked up to the top, and it took about one hour and a half. Paul was the first to reach the top, the next was his father, and his mother was the last. on the top of the mountain they saw some people who were enjoying hand gliding. Down below a lot of cows were eating grass in the field. Paul and his parents had a very good time at the picnic.



10. This is a story of one of the most famous men in the world. His name is Albert Schweitzer. When he was thirty years old, he began to study to become a doctor. He wanted to help many poor and sick people in Africa. In 1913 he went to Africa. He was very busy every day, because he had to take care of many people who needed his help. He did everything he could for them. They did not have to pay for his help. The 1952 Nobel Peace Prize was given to Albert Schweitzer.



11. Jack lives a small town in Texas with his father, mother and Betty, his younger sister. One day in the summer his mother asked him to go to the super-market to buy some cold drinks for the family. His mother handed him four dollars. He went to the supermarket by bicycle. It took him fifteen minutes to get there. He paid three dollars and sixty cents for four cans of orange juice and received forty cents in change. When he returned home, he gave the change back to his mother.



12. Miss White is from America. She lives in Taipei. She has been in Taiwan for six months. She teaches English at a university from Monday to Friday. She likes to teach very much. She tells her students a lot of things about her country in her classes. When she teaches, she tries to speak easy English very slowly. Her students can understand her easily. Since her first visit, more and more students have become interested in English, and enjoy studying it.



13. Tom got a surprise yesterday. When he got home from school, he couldn’t find his mother anywhere. His sister, Anna, said to him, “Mother is in the hospital. Out new sister was just born.” Tom went to the hospital in a hurry with Anna. They saw their mother. She said, “Now you have another little sister. We will call her Mary.” In the evening their father came to the hospital. He took Tom and Anna to see the baby. Mary was sleeping in a little bed. Tom thought she wasn’t very pretty.



14. Jack likes studying history very much. One Sunday morning he was planning to visit a museum. He hurried to the station to catch the 7:30 train. As soon as he got there, he tried to buy a ticket for that train. The ticket clerk said, “The 7:30 train has just left. The next train will leave in thirty minutes.” “Has the 7:30 train gone already? It’s 7:27 by my watch,” said Jack. The clerk said a smile, “Look at that clock on the wall. It’s already past 7:30. your watch is three minutes slow.



15. Arthur goes to school by train. One morning he was very sleepy. After he left the station, he remembered that he left his bag in the train. Some textbooks, a box lunch and a dictionary were in the bag. At school he telephoned the lost and found office of the station to ask about the bag. But “We don’t have your bag” was the answer. He was shocked. He returned home and told his mother about it. His mother said, “You are lucky. A kind man brought your bag to the house. He found your name and address on it.”



16. This summer, Limei was taken to San Francisco by her aunt and uncle who are living in Taipei. She spent a week there. It was her first visit to a foreign country. San Francisco was full of visitors. There are many hills in the city. Limei rode on the famous cable car running through the city. When the cable car went up the hills, she was able to look down over the city. It was a great experience for her. She learned many things about San Francisco while she was there. She enjoyed San Francisco very much because she could see things with her own eyes.



17. One evening Taming went to a supermarket to buy some fruit and vegetables. The store was very crowed with shoppers. An American girl came up to him and said, “Excuse me, but I want to buy some milk. Do you know where it is?” Taming knew where it was, but he did not know how to answer in English. He could only point out the place to the girl. Taming was very unhappy, because he could not even say “over there” in English. He decided to study English much harder.



18. Lihua is a college student. One day, on her way home, she met her friend Takong. She met him last two years ago. They said “Hello!” to each other. Takong said, “I’m going to India next spring as an engineer. I have to teach people there how to make computers, so I have studied English conversation for two years.” She was in high school, he often slept in his English classes. She thought to herself he changed his mind about English.



19. One day, Mary and her mother went shopping to buy a pair of shoes. The shoe store was in the center of the city. The street was full of people. Everyone looked very busy. There were five young girls standing in front of the store. They were holding small boxes in their hands. Several people stopped and put something in the boxes. Mary asked her mother, “What are those people putting in the boxes?” “They’re putting money in them. Those girls are collecting money from people because they want to help the poor children in this city,” answered her mother.



20. This summer, Mr. Brown took a week’s holiday and decided to go camping with his family. His children, Alice and Mike were very glad. It was sunny on the day they left. They started early in the morning. On their way to the campground, they enjoyed looking at the beautiful mountains and lakes. They got there at noon, and began to get ready for lunch. Mike gathered some firewood. Father made a fire. Mother prepared food. Alice helped her mother cook. They enjoyed their lunch. After lunch, Alice and Mike went for a walk in the woods.



21. Lisa likes rabbits. She has ten pictures of rabbits on the walls in her room. Some of the rabbits are running and some are eating. Some are hopping and some are sleeping. One day, Lisa told her mother she wanted a real rabbit because she was tried of just looking at pictures of them. She wanted to hold a rabbit in her arms and play with it. She wanted to feed it carrots and green vegetables. On Lisa’s tenth birthday, her mother bought her a real rabbit. This made Lisa very happy. She played with it all day. That evening, she put the rabbit in a box in her room.



22. Taming practiced baseball every day. He was the best player in his school. No one hit the ball harder than he. No one ran faster than he. One day, an exchange student from Canada came to his school. His name was Peter. He was also a good baseball player. He could pitch better than anyone else. He joined the team and started practicing with Taming. They became good friends. They were both asked to play on the school team. Their team went to the finals. In the game, Peter pitched well and Taming hit a home run. Their team won the championship that year.



23. Almost every American child wants a summer job. It is a chance to get away from Mon and Dad, to make new friends, to do things by himself, and to make some pocket money. It may also be a useful experience for the future. Children wash cars, take care of babies, or cut the grass for their family or neighbors. John’s first summer job was selling lemonade with Tom on the beach. They could save little money, because they drank much of their lemonade themselves. It was so hot on the beach.



24. There are a lot of languages in the world.
  In Taiwan, most boys and girls study English. Why do they have to study it? Because it is used in a lot of countries.
  English is a great help and a very important language when they try to understand the people of other countries.
  What is the best way to learn English?
  Listen to good English first. Then use English at every chance. We have some chances to use it around us.
  We have to learn much about other countries.


25. Mary has moved into a five-story apartment house. Her rented room is too dirty to live in. the wall papers are faded, the gas oven is out of order, the desk and chair are dark brown, and the curtains and bedspread are pink. The owner has told her that she can paint the walls and desk and chair, fix the gas oven, and wash the curtains and bedspread in order to make the room more comfortable. Mary gave up living here. And soon she moved out.



26. Beth went to a business college to learn typing when she was eighteen years old. A year later, she passed her typing exams quite easily, and then went to look for work. She was living with her parents.
  A lot of people were looking for typists at that time, so it was not difficult to find work. Beth went to several offices, and then chose one of them. It was near her house. She thought, “I’ll walk there every morning. I won’t need to go by bus.”
  She went to the office again and said to the manager, “I want to work here, but how much will you pay me?”
  “We’ll pay you $200 each week at first,” the manager answered, “and $250 after three months.”
  Beth thought for a minute and then said, “All right, then I’ll start three months from now.”

Suddenly I heard someone running from the bank. He was tall and thin. More important, he had a bag of money and a gun in his hand. Betty almost cried when she saw a man having a gun. But I couldn’t do anything. Just standing. That man ran up the street and disappeared at last. The police and TV reporters arrived at the spot in less than ten minutes. They interviewed us about this case. The next morning, I was surprised to find that our picture was in the newspaper. On reading the newspaper, I called up Betty. She was very excited. On the phone, I promised her to meet at the park at four o’clock to show our picture in the newspaper.



29. The sun gives more light than all the electric lights in the world. It gives us light and heat. Without sunshine, nothing will grow in the world.
  At night we can see the stars. All day the stars are in the sky, but the light from the sun is bright, so we can’t see them. The stars are bright only when the sky is dark.
  The stars look very, very small, but some are bigger than the sun. Things look small when they are far away. Planes in the sky look like toys, but on the ground they are very big.
  The moon is a ball, too, like the earth and the sun. It is smaller than the stars, but it looks bigger because it is nearer to the earth. The moon has no light. It is bright because the sun shines on it.



30. How much paper do you use every year? Perhaps you can’t you can’t answer that question quickly. Some countries use as much as 50 kilograms of paper for each person in a year. Countries like the United States, England and Sweden use more paper than other countries.
  Paper is made from the wood of trees. So the forest countries like Canada, Sweden, Norway, Finland and the United states have become the most important countries in paper making. Finland makes the best paper in the world.
  Today paper-making machines are very big, and they make paper very fast. Watch them run! The biggest machines can make a piece of paper 400 meters long and six meters wide in one minute.
  When we think of paper, we think of newspaper, books, letters, and writing paper. But there are many other uses. Only half of the paper that is made is used for books and newspaper. For example, paper keeps you warm. In Finland’s cold winters, the farmers wear paper boots in the snow. Nothing is warmer than paper boots.
